A common question we get with regards to anatomical donation has to do with Power of Attorney. And, by extension of the obvious, notarization of documents. Power of attorney is a useful tool for preparing for your future. Some of the information we will be sharing here is more suited for medical power of attorney but still sound advice be it medical power of attorney or just plain old power of attorney.
A medical power of attorney is a legal document that gives another individual of your choice the legal right to make medically related decisions on your behalf. If there is ever a time where you are unable to make your own decisions this designation will enable the person you choose to be your power of attorney to assure your wishes are carried out. This includes the decision whether or not to resuscitate you should you stop breathing on your own.
To start a power of attorney process you can find everything you need on, you guessed it, the internet. You can also find forms to get started at your local office store or a licensed attorney. You can do it yourself or have an attorney do it for you. You sign, your designee signs and two witnesses sign in front of a Notary Public and from the date of execution of the document it is in force.
If you are considering supporting medical science through whole body donation you do not need a power of attorney or medical power of attorney. Nor do you need anything notarized. Probably the most important information for pwer of attorney that we can offer is the following:
- Do I trust this person?
- Does this person understand my feelings and my point of view? Will he or she ever follow my wishes if I am ever incapicitated?
- Is this person willing to do the work and spend the time handling my affairs?
- Is this person available to visit me or keep in contact by phone?
- Is this person knowledgable about finances? If not will this person seek the help of professionals who do?
